The Drayton Valley Thunder joined the Alberta Junior A Hockey League in the 1998-99 season. By the 2001-2002 season, they finished in second place in the North Division, beat two other teams in four games straight, and won the League Championship. The 2002 League MVPs for the playoffs were all from the Thunder, and Jade Galbraith was named League Scoring Champion. The Thunder play out of the Drayton Valley Omniplex from September to February.
